Wheelchair Services

Wheelchair Services typically provide assessments, prescribe and supply wheelchairs, and offer ongoing maintenance, repairs, and reviews as your child grows and their needs change. Depending on your child’s requirements, they may also work alongside physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the equipment supports their posture, comfort, and daily activities.

Access to services and eligibility criteria can vary depending on where you live, so it’s worth speaking with your child’s healthcare team or your local Wheelchair Service to understand what support is available. If NHS provision does not meet your child’s needs, your clinical team may also be able to advise on charitable funding or alternative sources of specialist equipment.

Many children aged 3-5 years with limited mobility are missing out on receiving an appropriate wheelchair from their local NHS wheelchair service across the country. This is due to the very strict eligibility and issuing criteria that the NHS uses to decide whether someone can receive a wheelchair and what type.
